Compulsory recruitment by new cease-fire Border Guards
Dec 15, 2009 - In a verbal order issued on November 29, 2009, villagers from Daw Rawkhu, Loinampha Township were ordered to provide troops for the Karenni Nationalities People Liberation Front (KNPLF), an armed cease-fire group.
The compulsory order relayed to Thaysoe Leh, Hsobawthe, Daw Dipoe, Daw Tangu, Lay Mine and Lahleh villages in Deemawsoe Township are that each village must provide three men to enrol with the KNPLF. "If they fail to provide the men, each family must pay a fine of 2,000 kyat.
No written order was provided to any village and nobody is willing to join the KNPLF troops, so this is a big challenge for them," the source added.
The KNPLF reached a cease-fire agreement with the Burmese regime in 1994 and in a ceremony on November 8th this year they officially transformed their troops into a Border Guard Force.
