Mother killed as armies clash

Feb 4, 2009 - A gunfight occurred recently between Burmese troops from Shadaw-based LIB no. 525, column no. 2, commanded by Major Aung Khaing Mya, and a Karenni Army company led by Sergeant Plae Reh, at Daw Klehtay village, west of Shadaw, and a villager, who was caught in the crossfire, was killed.

A senior Karenni Army official reported that the gunfight took place on January 30, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. when both sets of troops coincidentally visited the village at the same time. Gunfire was exchanged for about 20 minutes.

"No causality were reported from amongst the Burma Army or Karenni troops, but a female villager - Twah Meh, aged 35 - was reportedly hit by a round of rifle arm and killed. She leaves a one-year old child”, said the officer.

Daw Klehtay is one of the villages that was resettled during the SPDC's massive forced relocation of villages in 1996. At that time villages were moved to relocation camps in Shadaw, Nwalavoe and Chitkeh. At the end of 2008 some of the villages were allowed to return to their original locations, so the villagers of Daw Klehtay have only recently returned to their original village.
