Threats from Burmese troops forces population to abandon their village
Jan 31, 2010 - A social worker active inside Karenni State has reported that following intimidation from the Burma Army, villagers from Daw Takh, located on the Karenni–Shan border, have abandoned their village and moved to other locations. The move started after Burmese troops from IB no. 99 and IB no. 132 threatened to burn their village down.
There were 21 families residing in Daw Takhu. Eight families moved to Wamngaw and Daw Tanaw villages and the others moved to Daw Muleh village.
“A joint military column from IB no. 99, led by Major Kyaw San and IB no. 132 led by Major Zaw Zaw, came to Daw Takhu on January 24th and arrested a villager named Bureh, aged 19. The troops accused Bureh of passing information to the Karenni soldiers. They beat him up and prepared to burn him alive, but Bureh managed to escape. The Burmese troops became angry with the remaining villagers and confiscated three pigs, five chickens, 10 bottles of whisky, a tin of wine and 10 bottles of beer from the village. Furthermore, as they left the village on the 27th, they took four mules", said the source.
Before they left the village, the Burmese troops warned villagers that they would come back and burn the village down if Bureh wasn't found.
Similarly, the entire population of the village of Gaylo, Pasaung Township, also left for the border and arrived at a refugee camp at the end of 2009 due to repeated forced labor and threats by the Burmese troops camped in the area.
