SPDC commander cancels ID cards of 7 families
Feb 7, 2010 - Seven families from Klaleh village, Shadaw Township, have had their Identity Cards revoked by Major Soe Min Latt from the Burma Army's LIB no. 516.
An inside source said: “Last month the families were accused by the Burmese commander of contacting and helping the Karenni soldiers. The families were very frightened, so they left for the border late last month."
Upon arrival at a border refugee camp, one of the family members said an unknown villager had reported to the Burmese troops that some villagers had provided food to the Karenni soldiers. "He gave our names to the Burmese commander. If we hadn't fled, they would surely have killed us".
According to the new arrival, “The soldiers had taken our ID cards sometime ago. Since we didn’t have the ID cards with us, they classified us as rebels. We noticed lately that the IDs of all the members of the seven families have been nullified. Even before they confiscated our ID cards, we were frequently forced to work at their army camp, Htinyutaung, by providing bamboo and fencing off the camp.”
Following a gunfight that occurred on December 27, 2009 near Daw Mumar, between the Karenni forces and Burmese troops from LIB no. 575 commanded by Major Thein Aung Lwin, the Klaleh village head, Htay Reh, was arrested and subjected to various forms of torture by the Burmese troops.
There were 29 families in Daw Klaleh, but seven families have now gone to a border refugee camp as they feared for their safety.
