Village Heads ordered to serve until 2010
Jan 21, 2009 - For the past decade villagers in Karenni State have operated a system of rotating head men as the position has become both onerous and dangerous due to the ever increasing military presence in the area and the demands made by the Burmese Army. Under the current system all villagers over the age of 18 can be chosen by their own villagers to be village head for six months or a year in rotation.
However, from 2009 new rules have been imposed. Loikaw’s Burmese military control commander has verbally ordered all village heads to serve right up to the end of 2010.
Furthermore villagers who were elected by the villagers on the rotation system still have to serve a term up until the end of 2010.
