Villager beaten to death by local militia
Jan 20, 2009 - A Tharwah villager was beaten to death on January 16th by a group from the Loilin Lay local militia. The assault took place at around 6 p.m. at a log-mill owned by a Kyiekton villager named Hla Oo.
According to a local source the man who was killed was name Maung Phyu. The source explained, “Maung Phyu’s father is seriously ill and he was receiving medical treatment at the Loikaw Hospital, so the family needed money to pay for his treatment. In order to raise money Maung Phyu and his young brother went to the forest to cut wood, which they sold to Hla Oo at his log-mill. When they asked for payment for the logs, Hla Oo said he couldn’t give them any money and instead he reported the brothers to the Loilin Lay militias for cutting wood illegally. Soon afterward, a group of militias beat Mayng Phu to death at the log-mill and arrested his young brother, who was sent to the Burmese military battalion no.530 for detention. The brother was threatened and told he should not talk of the murder to anybody.”
A couple of days later the news reached a Tharwah monk who went to the Burma Army’s camp together with the Teelon village tract Chairman. They asked for Maung Phyu’s body to be released, but the Burmese commander claimed that Maung Phyu wasn’t there as he had been released.
Furthermore the Burmese army also forbade Maung Phyu’s family from carrying out any logging in the future.
