Permission required to work in paddy fields
Jul 5, 2010 - A resident of the Shadaw forced relocation camp has reported that camp residents are required to get permission from the Burmese troops of IB no. 12 to visit their paddy fields. A charge of 500 kyat is made for the permit which is only valid for a week. Farmers are therefore forced to renew the permits every weekend in order to care of their crops. more »
Reconstruction of the Mawchi car road planned
Jul 3, 2010 - The two commanders of the White Star cease-fire armed group convened a meeting at their Kehmaphyu base on June 29th. Htucari and Tarneh are the commanders of the of the Karenni National Solidarity Organization, known locally as White Star (Kyehphyu). Villagers from around eight large villages and four smaller villages located near Mawchi were summoned to the meeting. more »
Jul 2, 2010 - A Mae Se resident has reported that the natural pine forest which once covered most of the mountains in the Mae Se area are almost depleted. Local people have felled the trees to extract pine oil for sale, or for their own use, without replanting the area. more »
Forced enrolment into new USDP political party
Jun 12, 2010 - The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) is trying to ensure its victory in the forthcoming general elections by forcing people to enroll as members. The USDP, formerly called Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA), is closely allied with the ruling SPDC military dictatorship. An inside source reported early this week that people in Deemawso and Loikaw Townships are being being conscripted as members of the party against their will. Furthermore they are being charged a membership fee of 1,000 kyat. more »
TB cases escalate in border refugee camp
Jun 8, 2010 - The Chairperson of a Karenni Refugee camp in Mae Surin announced earlier this week that the number of Tuberculosis bacteria (TB) patients has dramatically increased in Karenni Refugee Camp 2. Reported cases are up 15 percent, coinciding with an influx of new arrivals. more »
